Four soldiers were killed, and four others were injured during an explosion triggered by PKK terrorists in Turkey's southeastern Hakkari province on Wednesday.

The explosion was reportedly caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by the terrorist group.

The injured soldiers were immediately brought to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

A counterterror operation was launched on the scene after the deadly attack, media sources reported.

Meanwhile, weapon pits, shelters, weapons arsenals and ammunition depots used by PKK terrorists were destroyed in air strikes conducted late Tuesday in northern Iraq's Gara region.

Founded in 1978, the PKK has waged a decades-long bloody campaign against Turkey.

The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU, resumed its armed campaign in July 2015 after a brief reconciliation period.

Since that time, the PKK has been responsible for the deaths of some 1,200 security personnel and civilians, including women and children, and injuries of more than 4,000 security personnel and 2,000 civilians.
