12 PKK terrorists were killed in two separate counter-terror operations in northern Iraq and southeastern Turkey, military sources said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Turkish General Staff said six terrorists were killed in Iraq's Zap region during an air operation on Wednesday.

Six more PKK terrorists were killed in a separate air operation in southeastern Hakkari province's Çukurca district, an official, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on talking to the media, said.

The latest death toll brings the number of PKK terrorists killed in the Turkey's southeast since Tuesday to 17.

Hideouts and shelters belonging to the terrorists were also hit during the operation, the statement added.

Also, five other PKK terrorists surrendered to Turkish officials in southeastern Şırnak province's Silopi district on Tuesday, according to the regional governor's office.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU -- resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015 and since then has been responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,200 security personnel and civilians, including women and children.
