Anti-PKK ops carried out in northeast Turkey

A large-scale operation against the PKK terrorist organization was carried out over the weekend by gendarmerie special operations teams in the northeastern province of Erzincan.

The operation, which began Friday and ended Sunday, took place in the province's Kemah district in temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius at an altitude of 3,000 meters, according to a governorship statement issued Tuesday.

"Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, all the shelters and caves that were used by the PKK/KCK [Kurdish Communities Union] in past years were destroyed," the statement said.

"Cobra" helicopters were deployed in support of the troops due to the difficult conditions in mountainous snow-covered fields around the nearby districts of Munzur and Mercan, it added.

Meanwhile, at least four PKK terrorists were killed in an air raid as part of the ongoing anti-terror operations in eastern and southeastern Turkey, according to the Turkish military.

The air operation was conducted in the Genç district in the eastern province of Bingöl and the Lice district in the southeastern province Diyarbakır, the Turkish General Staff said.

Security forces also seized several weapons, 36 pistol cartridges, 350 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, and various equipment used in making improvised explosives along with 135 kilograms of marijuana, the statement added.
