Operation Euphrates Shield: Day 84, 2 FSA fighters killed as 3 more villages liberated
Two members of the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) died while seven others were injured in clashes in northern Syria on Monday, the Turkish military sources said in a statement yesterday.
According to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), the FSA also took "much of the control" in three more villages near the Daesh-held town of al-Bab.
TSK added that the Syrian opposition forces also hit Daesh and PKK-affiliated Democratic Union Party (PYD) targets, including shelters, command-and-control centers and vehicles on Monday.
Operation Euphrates Shield began in late August to rid Syria's northern border areas of terrorists. Yesterday marked the 84th day of the operation which has seen nearly 1,700 square kilometers (656 square miles) in northern Syria cleared of Daesh presence so far.
Some 36 mines and 1,548 improvised explosives have been defused in total since operation began on Aug. 24.
Six Daesh suspects detained
in southern Adana province
Meanwhile, at least six suspects related to Daesh were detained yesterday in an anti-terror operation in the southern province of Adana, a police source on condition of anonymity said.
According to the source, Turkish law enforcers aided by some armored vehicles raided several addresses in the area early on Tuesday morning. The suspects were then taken to the Provincial Security Directorate after health checks at the Adana Forensic Medicine Unit.
Three police officers had died in an explosion last month as they raided an address linked to Daesh terrorists in Gaziantep, southern Turkey.
The country has been a prime target of suicide attacks since the rise of the Daesh terrorist group in the region. In the most recent attack in Gaziantep, nearly 60 people were killed in August when a suicide bomber detonated himself at a wedding ceremony, prompting Ankara to launch Operation Euphrates Shield to secure the border with Syria and cleanse the area of terrorists.
Since the beginning of 2016, Turkey has prevented over 52,075 people from entering the country and detained thousands of Daesh suspects
