A German court has sentenced a PKK suspect to 3.5 years in prison for providing support to a terrorist organization on Thursday.

According to reports, Stuttgart State Court handed down a jail term for Ali Ö., who was detained in February 2015.

He has been charged with 'collecting funds for a terrorist organization' and 'being a member of a terrorist organization.'

The court said that the suspect has been supporting terrorist activities in Germany's Kiel, Saxony, and Stuttgart regions since 2010.

It also highlighted that the PKK is a foreign terrorist organization.

The prosecutor had demanded a 4.5 year prison term for Ali Ö. when he was detained in 2015.

PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the EU and the United States.

Formed in 1978, the terrorist group has been fighting the Turkish government for an independent state until the early 2000's. The group then shifted its goal to autonomy in predominately Kurdish inhabited regions of Turkey.

The PKK is affiliated with PYD, which is present in Syria and is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey.

Western countries long claimed that the PYD is not a terrorist organization but U.S. officials, including Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter, admitted that there are links between the PKK and the PYD and its armed-wing, YPG.
