Umut Ayvalık, 11, died and two others were wounded in Turkey's southeastern province of Hakkari on Tuesday when an unidentified object they were playing with exploded. The children found the item at the site of the former Vali Erdoğan Gürbüz Primary School, which was damaged by terror attacks and later demolished in Hakkari's Yüksekova district. His companions were also taken for medical treatment, one for serious injuries at a hospital in the neighboring Van province. The third child was treated at Yüksekova State Hospital.

Hakkari province has seen broad anti-terror operations against the PKK.

The PKK set up barricades, dug ditches in the streets and planted explosive devices into many locations in the cities of southeastern Turkey during the clashes to prevent Turkish security forces from entering urban areas.

In March, two children were killed in the Cizre district of southeastern Şırnak province for the same reason. Harun Çağlı, 4, and Ayşenur Geçit, 6, were wounded in the explosion while they were playing with an object they found on the street. The two children died on the road of İdil State Hospital.

Gendarmerie detain 2 PKK

The killings expose the organization's reformulation of its violence strategy, which has set its sights on assassinating politicians to suppress all critical voices and Kurdish movements apart from itself in the region.

47 suspects detained in anti-

terror ops in east, southeast

Forty-seven suspects were detained yesterday in anti-terror operations against the PKK in eastern and southeastern Turkey.

Police sources said that suspects include officials of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and its local wing, the pro-PKK Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Anadolu Agency reported.

The operations were held in the eastern province of Van and the southeastern province of Hakkari. While 40 of the suspects were detained in Van, the rest were detained in Hakkari.

Metin Besi, the HDP's Hakkari province co-chair, was among the detainees in that province. The suspects were taken to the police station for testimony.
