HRW concerned about Shiite militias' abuses in Iraq
Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged Iraqi Prime Minister Haydar al-Abadi on Friday to prevent the Iran-backed fanatical Shiite militia group Hashd al-Shaabi's attendance to the planning of an upcoming Mosul operation.
In a statement published on the group's website, HRW expressed its view that the armed group - which violates laws of war against the Iraqi government - should be excluded from the Mosul operation. "To those who have been prohibited from participating [in the Mosul Operation] should be included the government's ally, Hashd al-Shaabi's militias," stated the group.
The HRW also called on al-Abadi to prevent other Shiite paramilitary organizations such Badr Corps as well as Hezbollah, who are well-known for human right abuses against Sunni citizens, and also take necessary measures after liberating Mosul to protect civilians who fled from the government's sectarian policies.
Experts warn of a repeat of the "Fallujah scenario" for Mosul, in which "the ‘liberators" end up fighting each other for territory and control, and commit many human rights abuses. Sunni citizens of Fallujah are being subject to mistreatment simply because they are Sunnis or were living in Daish-held parts of the city. Hundreds of civilians from Fallujah had been executed and the city vandalized by Shiite militias. Also, Sunni prisoners in Fallujah prisons were executed by fanatical Shiite groups.
Shiite paramilitary organizations have long been threatening the stability in Iraq and strike as much fear as Daish into locals. There have been various fanatical Shiite paramilitary organizations in Iraq, most of which are under the control of Shiite extremists who are believed to be affiliated with Iranian authorities. Having more than 150,000 Shiite militants in total, those paramilitary organizations committed countless murders of Sunni citizens, thinkers and scholars as "revenge" taken from Daish. The largest Shiite-scholars-led extremist organizations operating in Iraq are the Badr Corps, Mahdi Army, Army Mukhtar and Al Abbas Brigade.
