The encrypted messaging application Bylock, which was used by the members of the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) before and during the July 15 coup attempt, was initially programmed in 2014 for the elections for the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), a new report revealed on Sunday.
According to Haber Türk daily's report, FETÖ members focused on the HSYK elections after losing hope that the Dec. 17-25 coup attempt would succeed. The app was then programmed to be used actively by the group's members in their communications. Prosecutors say that Bylock was popular among Gülenists as a secretive form of communication from 2013 to 2015. Various ministries have since launched an investigation into workers who allegedly used Bylock by actively suspending and terminating app users who were found to be active members of FETÖ.
Meanwhile, the investigation launched into the members of the group using the app has also revealed that 700 suspected members of the group who used the app were also under investigation for their role in the 2010 cheating scandals surrounding the Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS). The investigation has also exposed that among the 700, many held key positions in FETÖ. The failed July 15 coup attempt, which left 241 people dead and nearly 2,200 injured, was organized by followers of Gülen, who has lived in self-imposed exile on a 400-acre property in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania since 1999. Gülen is the mastermind of a long-running campaign to overthrow the Turkish state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary, forming what the government has called the parallel structure.
