Following the bloody coup attempt carried out by members of the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ) on July 15, many people in Turkey, including politicians, journalists and academics have voiced allegations that the U.S. has supported this attempt.

Fethullah Gülen, who is the imam of the shadowy group and the alleged leader of FETÖ, has been in a self-imposed exile in the United States' Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania since 1999. Gülen's undisturbed presence in the U.S. despite repeated demands by its ally Turkey for his extradition has been left unanswered so far.

Meanwhile, John Bass, the U.S. ambassador in Ankara, and other U.S. government officials have strongly denied such accusations, adding that the U.S. government is ready to meet with Turkish officials to review the evidence that would lead to Gülentarget="_blank"'>
