PKK attack on military post kills 1 soldier, 2 village guards

Three security forces were killed on Wednesday in a PKK attack on a gendarmerie station located in the Anıtlı village of the Midyat district in the southeastern province of Mardin.

PKK terrorists planned an attack on the military station using an explosives-laden car, but the car was spotted by security forces as it was approaching the station. Village guards opened fire on the car, which detonated near the station, killing two village guards and a sergeant. Two other security officers were also wounded in the attack.

Ambulances were dispatched to the scene and an operation has been launched in the area.

The two wounded officers, one in critical condition, were transferred to Midyat State Hospital.

Previously, six soldiers were killed and four were wounded in a PKK attack on Tuesday in the Çaldıran district of the eastern province of Van.

The attack was a roadside bomb on the highway between Çaldıran and Ağrı's Doğubeyazıt district. PKK terrorists detonated the bomb as a military vehicle was passing. The wounded soldiers were immediately transferred to hospitals.

The PKK continues to fuel sentiments about the organization with its nearly year-long campaign in the southeast.

Along with losing popularity among Kurds due to crippling their lives by digging ditches, setting up barricades and planting roadside explosives, the PKK also appears to be shedding militants who are deserting.

On Tuesday, 26 PKK terrorists surrendered to security forces in the Nusaybin district of Mardin. A member of the security forces asserted that more terrorists would also surrender due to the ongoing Hawk-7 Operation meant to fill in PKK trenches, lift barricades, destroy improvised explosives and re-establish public order in the region.

The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU, resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in July 2015.

Since then, more than 480 members of the security forces, including troops, police officers and village guards, have been killed.
