Footage shows Ankara bombers with another terrorist in car
Footage of terrorists in the bomb-laden car just hours before perpetrating the deadly attack in Ankara on Sunday that killed 37 people was revealed yesterday, which shone some light on the details of the attack.
According to the image that the daily Milliyet reported, two suicide bombers, Seher Çağla Demir and Özgür Ünsal, together with another suspect, Vahit Kılıç, are seen in a white BMW with the license plate 34 HGH 44.
As the investigation into the attack continues, DNA samples collected from the dead bodies at the scene and families of both Demir and Ünsal have been matched. However, Kılıç's whereabouts are unknown and he is suspected to have escaped to Syria, according to experts in the investigation process.
Investigators suspect Kılıç left Ankara with another rented car before the attack, which was found abandoned in the southeastern border province of Şanlıurfa this week.
Evidence indicates that Kılıç met with Demir, who is suspected of having crossed the border from Syria and arranged the car that was used in the attack in Şanlıurfa. He came to Ankara on Feb. 26 with Demir after having meetings with PKK militants in the southeastern Diyarbakır province. They then stayed with Ünsal at his mother's house until moving to another house in the city. According to testimony from Ünsal's mother, Kılıç was also Demir's boyfriend at the time.
MOBESE camera records show that the 300 kilograms of explosives, including TNT, RDX and ammonium nitrate covered with beeswax were loaded in the car in Ankara's suburban Çamlıdere district. Both RDX and TNT have military and industrial applications, while ammonium nitrate is an explosive compound mainly used as a fertilizer that is often added to homemade bombs.
A military source who spoke to Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media, said the composition and scale of the bomb was similar to the device used in the attack on military buses in Ankara on Feb. 17 that killed 29.
The Interior Ministry said this week in a written statement that Demir joined the PKK in 2013 and was allegedly trained by the Syrian PKK affiliate, the Democratic Union Party's (PYD) People's Protection Units (YPG) militia in Syria. She was reportedly born in 1992 in the eastern city of Kars.
