Tons of hazelnuts flow into Black Sea after floods in Turkey's Ordu province

Tons of hazelnuts flowed into the Black Sea after catastrophic floods hit northern Turkey's Ordu province.

Huge "clouds" of hazelnuts floating in the sea could be seen early in the morning Thursday.

The town of Çaybaşı — one of the most damaged places in Ordu — alone lost some 30 tons of hazelnuts, its mayor Ismet Yanık said.

Hazelnut groves, a main source of income for the region, were damaged due to strong winds and floods during the harvest season. Many producers lost tens of thousands of tons of harvested hazelnuts to flooding rivers and streams. Turkey produces nearly 70 percent of the world's hazelnuts, according to the Customs and Trade Ministry.
