4,114-year-old yew tree boosts visitors to Turkey's western Black Sea forests

A 4,114-year-old yew tree located in Turkey's northern Zonguldak province is boosting the number of visitors to the spectacular forests of the western Black Sea region, as another ecotourism destination.

Identified as one of the oldest trees in the world, the conifer was declared a natural monument and immediately taken under preservation by the Ministry of Forestry when it was first discovered in 2016.

Many tourists now come to the area from different cities of Turkey as well as from abroad to see the yew tree, which is reportedly the fifth oldest tree in the world and the oldest in Turkey.

The tree is located in Gümeli village of Zonguldak's Alaplı district at an altitude of 1,200 meters.

The City Forest in the Kaymakdere area also attracts visitors to its hiking trails, streams and bridges, making the area a must-see spot for nature lovers, especially in autumn.

Apart from the ancient yew, there are many endemic plant species in the forests of Zonguldak and Karabük provinces, which attract visitors from neighboring Bolu, Bartın and Ankara provinces to escape from the rush of urban life.
