Policeman involved in Gezi Park rioter's murder released

Ahmet Şahbaz, a policeman accused of killing Ethem Sarısülük, a rioter involved in the Gezi Park riots in 2013, was released by a court on Thursday due to lack of evidence to implicate him. The Sixth Heavy Criminal Court in Ankara, where Sarısülük was killed, ruled for the release of Şahbaz who was originally sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of "murder under unjust provocation" and for "using duty weapons for criminal purposes." The Supreme Court of Appeals had overturned the ruling, citing that the lower court did not hear the testimony of some eyewitnesses and camera footage that allegedly showed the killing was not examined thoroughly.
