Domestic tourism still largely confined to visiting relatives

Tourism by residents in Turkey rose 3.6 percent in 2014, as domestic tourists took 70.9 million trips, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) said in a statement yesterday.
While "visiting relatives" was the primary purpose of trips at 65.7 percent, the secondary purpose of trips was "travel, leisure and holiday" at 19 percent and the third was "health" at 8.4 percent.
Most travelers stayed with friends and relatives, the statement said.
Spending by domestic tourists in Turkey reached TL 22.6 billion ($8.4 billion) in the past year.
Domestic tourists spent nearly TL 4 billion in the final quarter of last year, marking an 11.7 percent increase compared with the same period of the previous year, according to the survey.
The number of domestic trips of one night or more reached 14.1 million in the same period, with a 2.3 percent increase.
Domestic tourism expenditure was composed of individual spending and package tour costs. While 96.1 percent of domestic tourism expenditure was individual (TL 3.8 billion), 3.9 percent of it was on package tours (TL 155 million).
