One of the minarets of Sultanahmet Mosque, a renowned touristic spot which draws thousands of visitors every day, has started tilting to one side. The movement has prompted officials to launch restoration works to fix the impaired minaret, which is considered to pose a threat to the security of lives.Sultanahmet Mosque, also known as the 'Blue Mosque' which was built in 1616 has six minarets. The general directory of the foundations, which recently inspected the quality of the mosque, spotted that one of the minarets was leaning towards one side. As a precaution the minaret has been put under restoration to enforce it.The Sultanahmet Mosque was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I, and is also called the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. The head of the general directory of the foundations, Adnan Ertem, said the mosque has been thoroughly inspected. The grounds of the mosque have no serious problems despite being constructed hundreds of years ago."But the minaret is spotted to be posing danger for lives. We noticed that from time to time particles are being dislodged from the minaret and upon the findings there has been an urgent intervention into the case," added Ertem.Pointing out that the part above the balcony of the minaret (including the cone) had been removed Ertem said the minaret's state was not that bad. "A report is to be prepared pertaining to how the reinforcement will be made. As the result of the report, the works will be launched and the minaret will be stronger in one year."
