Renowned Turkish cardiovascular surgeon, Bingür Sönmez was assaulted by an unidentified person, or people, in a square in the eastern province of Kars yesterday. Sönmez was shot in the arm and leg in Gaziler Square and was hospitalized.Doctors confirmed his condition is not critical. Former mayor of Kars' Sarıkamış district was taken into custody as a suspect. Apart from his professional duty as a cardiovascular surgeon, Sönmez heads an association dedicated to soldiers who died in Sarıkamış during World War I.
