Prosecutor Kocaman requested on Friday that generals Kenan Evren and Tahsin Şahinkaya be served aggravated life imprisonment sentences for leading the junta that staged the September 12, 1980 military intervention which ousted the government at the time.
General Kenan Evren, who is also Turkey's seventh president and General Şahinkaya participated in Friday's hearing through a video link as both are hospitalized due to health conditions.
The trial in what is considered to be the bloodiest coup in Turkey's history, began on April 4, 2012. Generals Evren and Şahinkaya are being charged with attempting to alter or eradicate the Constitution and to override the mission of the Parliament.
