Municipality to hold iftar dinners in Gezi Park

Gezi Park in Taksim, Istanbul will be home to fast-breaking dinners during the Islamic month of Ramadan, a statement by Beyoglu municipality said.



"We are continuing the twenty-year-old tradition of Gezi Park iftar dinners," Mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan said. "All Istanbulites are invited."

The municipality plans to serve 1,500 people a day throughout the month. Tables will be removed and set up again for dinner every evening, the statement said.Gezi Park had seen thousands of people's protest against a development plan in the city center last month.

Demonstrations centered on the park began with environmental concerns but quickly turned into mass anti-government rallies across the country for over three weeks.
