The first stage of construction for the Istanbul's new airport is nearly 40 percent complete, marking a significant milestone in the construction of the world's largest airport.
The third of its kind in Istanbul and the largest in the world, Istanbul New Airport will have the capacity to host 90 million travelers by the end of the first stage of construction and 150 million upon completion, making it the world's largest transportation hub on the largest plot of land ever designated for an airport facility.
Upon completion, Istanbul New Airport will host twice as many passengers as the world's most crowded airport; threefold bigger than its biggest rival in terms of coverage. Istanbul's third airport, which will have the largest terminal under one roof and the largest duty-free area, will also be the world's first airport to carry the title "Green Airport." The first part of the new airport is scheduled to open in February 2018.
The biggest and most strategic project in the history of the Republic of Turkey, the construction of the new airport is being completed by the Istanbul Grand Airport (TGA) company, which was established by the Cengiz-Mapa-Limak-Kolin-Kalyon consortium within the scope of Turkey's vision for 2023. Employees are arduously working 24 hours a day, seven days a week in three shifts to complete the project.
While the first stage is scheduled to open in February 2018, the airport will see air traffic from 2,000 aircraft per day.
Expected to serve 250 airline companies, the airport will be one of the largest hubs in the world with flights scheduled to more than 350 destinations around the world.
While the number of airports in Turkey having increased from 26 to 55 over the last 14 years, the number of passengers who utilize these airlines has increased fivefold from 35 million to 180 million.
The passenger capacity of the new hub will be 90 million upon the first stage of completion, hosting 110 million at full capacity. Comparatively, Istanbul's Atatürk International Airport's terminal building, which currently has a capacity of more than 60 million passengers annually, is a third smaller than Istanbul New Airport.
When all phases of the third airport are completed, it will have more than twice the passenger capacity of the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world's busiest airport with a capacity of 90 million passengers per year.
On the other hand, Istanbul New Airport, which will have the capacity to host 110 million passengers even in its first stage, will be the best in this field.
According to the Airports Council International (ACI), Atlanta International Airport served 101.4 million passengers in 2015, while Beijing Capital International Airport hosted 89.9 million, Dubai International Airport hosted 78 million, Chicago O'Hare International Airport saw 76.9 million passengers, Tokyo International Airport 75.3 million, London Heathrow Airport hosted 74.98 million and Los Angeles International Airport saw 74.93 million passengers.
Triple the size of world's
largest airport
Istanbul New Airport will also come to the fore regarding its coverage of 7,594 hectares. In this context, it will now be three times the size of Beijing Capital International Airport, the world's largest airport with an area of 2,330 hectares. Atlanta International Airport has a land area of 1,902 hectares followed by London Heathrow Airport with 1,227 hectares and Istanbul Atatürk International Airport with 1,165 hectares.

under a single roof
The airport will have the world's largest terminal under a single roof and its apron will have the capacity to serve a total of 347 aircraft including 114 aircraft approaching the main terminal.
Istanbul New Airport will have the largest parking lot in Europe with a capacity of approximately 70,000 vehicles, including a closed area to hold 18,000 vehicles.
Istanbul New Airport will have the world's largest duty-free area of 53,000 square meters, which will gather more than 400 domestic and foreign brands under a single roof.
All commercial businesses that will be located at the third airport will have a green establishment certificate (LEED). In this respect, Istanbul New Airport will carry the title as the world's first green airport.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA) about the latest status of the airport construction, IGA Airports Construction CEO Yusuf Akçayoğlu said 40 percent of the airport's construction has been completed and work is ongoing day and night. Noting that the airport is nominated to enter the Guinness Book of Records in terms of the heavy equipment used in the airport's construction, Akçayoğlu said it is currently the world's biggest project in relation to the amount of active equipment on site.
Akçayoğlu informed that the number of personnel working in airport construction exceeds 22,000, 10 percent of whom are white-collar employees, adding that a fleet of 3,100 heavy equipment, including two high-capacity trucks, are working day and night at the construction site.
