Investments expected to attract tourists to eastern Turkey

The investment and development package for eastern and southeastern Anatolia regions which Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım announced in Diyarbakır a couple of days ago was welcomed by the tourism sector. Tourism sector representatives think that investments to be made in eastern and southeastern Turkey will turn the region into a touristic attraction center. Turkish Travel Agencies Association (TÜRSAB) President Başaran Ulusoy told Anadolu Agency that the investment package is crucial for the economic invigoration in eastern and southeastern provinces.Ulusoy also added that investments which will be made in Diyarbakır's Sur district to protect its historic foundations will increase tourism potential both for the city and the region. The city of Sur is included on the U.N.'s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage list. TÜRSAB President Ulusoy underlined that tourism offers solutions for unemployment, saying that the sector is a sphere which has potential to create new jobs in more than 50 sectors. As such, it is expected to have a crucial role in the region's economic development in the upcoming years. He continued by going on to say: "Our state is conducting the necessary studies to establish peace and welfare in the region. However, it would not be realistic to expect the tourism sector in these Anatolian regions to flourish in the short term. Actualization of the proposed investments and the eradication of PKK terrorism in the region are key goals and we expect the tourism economy to take shape with great contributions for the people of the region and the national economy."
