Tablet computer market share continues to decline

According to the data of U.S.-based market research, analysis and advisory firm International Data Corporation (IDC), the market share of tablet computers is continuing to decline. The figures released by the firm showed that 44.7 million tablets were introduced to the global market in the second quarter of 2015. While the number of tablet computers introduced to the market dropped 7 percent compared to the second quarter of the previous year, it also decreased 3.9 percent compared to the first quarter of this year. The data paints a less-than-positive picture for Apple and Samsung, the leading tablet computer firms. During the same period last year, the firms introduced 48 million tablet computers to the market. IDC said the decrease in the number of tablet computers is related to the long-lasting lifetime of the gadgets as well as the ability to download the latest software updates even to older tablets. Moreover, the widespread use of widescreen cellphones, which are also known as phablets, as well as their cheaper prices were among other reasons cited for the declining market share of tablets. The number of iPads released by Apple to the market decreased 17.9 percent, dropping the number to 10.9 million, whereas the number of tablets released by Samsung decreased 12 percent and dropped to 7.6 million from 8.6 million. Apple and Samsung are followed by Lenovo, Huawei and LG in terms of tablet computer market leaders. According to IDC, the change in the tablet computer market will pave the way for new models and different tablet standards.
