The earthquake research center at Istanbul's Boğaziçi University added another distinguished credential Monday, as it officially joined the ranks of the world's top tsunami monitoring, information, and warning centers, known as Tsunami Service Providers.

The university's Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute's Regional Earthquake and Tsunami Monitoring Center is now the official Tsunami Service Provider covering the eastern Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara, and Black Seas.

According to a statement by the center, Kandilli gained Interim Candidate Tsunami Service Provider Status in 2012, covering sea level changes and earthquakes in and around Turkey and providing necessary earthquake and tsunami data and warning for national and international institutions.

Accreditation application is required to be promoted from candidate status to provider status, according to the procedures of Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System in the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and connected seas initiative.

This March the Boğaziçi Monitoring Center applied for accreditation and was granted provider status, finishing the accreditation process in June.
