MHP's Bahçeli: Our support for gov't can be further enhanced to legal support

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli said that in the case of the necessity to protect Turkey's national and historical interest, the party's support for the government could further enhance to legal support. Speaking at the MHP's headquarters in Ankara on the weekend, Bahçeli stressed that under the current circumstances and the ongoing terror threat, a strong government in Turkey is a national obligation, "[o]therwise, the high risks and threats will walk over our country. We never want to lose our land. In this respect, we perceive a strong government as a national obligation. As the Nationalist Movement Party, we want to note that it is completely against the nationalist ideology and mind to idle if the Justice and Development Party's [AK Party] May 22 extraordinary congress is to slacken the country's anti-terror combat or weaken and cause an interim [period] in Turkey."

He claimed that his party takes a lot of responsibility in protecting Turkey's national and historical interests. Bahçeli said that this support can be further enhanced to legal support. "The Nationalist Movement Party will take all kinds of responsibilities for its country and nation if it is needed or required to protect Turkey's national and historical interests as the party's current, evident support for the government can be further enhanced to legal support," he said.

In response to a question about whether his remarks can be described as support for the AK Party's proposal for a presidential system, Bahçeli said: "Do not wait for a response from us in line with the government or the president's expectation by degrading the matter to a single dimension. What we say is way deeper, much more meaningful and more beneficial for the sake of the country."
