AK Party to hold extraordinary congress to elect chairman, executive committee


The governing Justice and Development Party (AK Party) announced on Friday the details of its extraordinary congress that will be held on May 22. The current AK Party chairman and prime minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, announced on May 5 that he will step down and will not run for the leadership in the upcoming congress.

According to the official announcement, the party will not only elect a new chairman to become prime minister, but the executive committee and other governing bodies of the party will also be reshuffled at the congress. The announcement said that the Central Decision Making and Administrative Committee (MYKY), which has 50 members, and all the members of the Central Disciplinary Committee (MYK), Intra-party Democracy Board and Political Virtue and Ethics Committee will also be reshuffled in the congress.

On May 22, the AK Party will hold the second extraordinary congress since its establishment in 2001. The first extraordinary congress in August 2014 was necessitated by the election of party leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as the 12th president of Turkey. The sole candidate, Davutoğlu, was elected party chairman then. According to internal practices, the AK Party is expected to only have one candidate in the upcoming congress.
