CHP set to hold retreat to resolve intra-party conflicts
The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) will hold its Extended Meeting of Provincial Heads this weekend in Antalya with the participation of CHP deputies and 81 provincial chairmen with the aim of establishing a joint expression among its members, according to sources close to the party. The CHP administration aims to smooth over party differences, and prevent behavior and action that are incompatible with the party's positions as well as bring an end to the conflicting statements made by its members and create a common voice for the party. CHP sources expected nearly 500 people to attend the party retreat.
With efforts to eliminate ideological differences between party members, which are an ongoing problem in intra-party debates, and create a common position for the party, its administration decided to organize the retreat for deputies and provincial organization members.
The first step of the action includes holding the Extended Meeting of Provincial Heads this weekend. Although the CHP Deputies Retreat was scheduled for the end of March, it was postponed due to Parliament going on break for 10 days following the budget debates.
Apart from the CHP Central Executive Committee, High Disciplinary Committee members, Provincial Assembly Council members, Party Assembly and High Disciplinary Committee members in Antalya, Burdur, Isparta, Konya, Denizli and Karaman provinces, those provinces' deputies, and members of the provincial general council and municipality board will also attend the retreat alongside the Extended Provincial Chairmen Meeting of around 500 people.
The retreat will begin with opening remarks from CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and will be closed to the press. It is expected that provincial chairmen will address issues regarding inadequacies and mistakes that the party has identified and make suggestions regarding how to remedy them. The main agenda of the retreat includes an assessment of the current condition of the party's different organizations and establishing a road map for a possible referendum or early election.
