The U.S. air force dropped 50 tons of arms ammo and grenades to the PKK-affiliated Democratic Union Party's (PYD) armed wing, the People's Protection Units (YPG), in the north Syrian Hasakah province. The 112 pallets reportedly contained ammunition for M-16s and AK-47s. The Pentagon confirmed Monday that U.S.-led coalition forces conducted an airdrop. "The aircraft delivery includes small arms ammunition to resupply the local forces to enable them to continue operations against ISIS," Pentagon spokeswoman Elissa Smith said. The "successful" airdrop was conducted by a "U.S. Air Force C-17 cargo aircraft flying from the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility."The U.S. announced last week that it would halt its $500 million train-and-equip program for the Syrian opposition but instead provide weapons and equipment packages to a select rebel group of vetted leaders and their units fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) in Syria.
