The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) will hold its fifth ordinary congress on Saturday with incumbent Ahmet Davutoğlu the sole candidate for the party leadership. The congress will also see a new set of members for the party's Central Decision and Administrative Board (MKYK) to provide a fresh impetus to the AK Party's campaign for the Nov. 1 parliamentary elections.Additionally, despite numerous deceptive rumors of others running as candidates to be the next party chairman, Davutoğlu will continue serving the AK Party as the chairman and 70 former deputies who served three consecutive terms in Parliament will again be eligible to run as deputy candidates.The number of prominent AK Party figures who were unable to announce deputy candidacy for the June 7 elections such as Ali Babacan, Binali Yıldırım, Ömer Çelik and Taner Yıldız will not only announce their candidacy for Nov. 1, but will also take part in the party's MKYK.The fifth AK Party congress is critical not only due to the new administrative body, but also new changes will come into effect as well. The three consecutive terms rule is to be modified for those deputies elected in the June 7 elections who would be subject to the three-term rule in the upcoming election thus also allowing them to participate in the early elections. Another change that comes with the congress is the establishment of a council that will be independent from the party's administration and will be responsible for any requests that come from the public. The council also has the right to inspect the ministers and deputies as well as mayors under the framework of transparency.As Turkey continues to go through rough times due to increasing terror attacks by the outlawed PKK, the AK Party will emphasize the significance of stability and unity. Sources have said that the party's new slogan is to be "Vote AK Party for stability." In addition, the party is to participate in the upcoming elections with its prominent figures that have the ability to take initiative during times of hardship. Sources close to the AK Party have confirmed that Cemil Çiçek will be on the MKYK list as Mehmet Ali Şahin, Yalçın Akdoğan, Efgan Ala, Nihat Ergün, Nurettin Canikli, as well as Bekir Bozdağ, Cevdet Yılmaz, Mustafa Şentop, Numan Kurtulmuş, Mehmet Şimşek and Mehmet Müezzinoğlu are among the figures taking part in the MKYK and the Nov. 1 elections.Though the final list of AK Party deputy candidates will be presented to the Supreme Election Board (YSK) on Sept. 18, the party will also announce new names as the elections draw closer. A total of 3,656 people have applied to be AK Party deputy candidates for the Nov. 1 general election. There are 558 female and 3,098 male applicants. The statistics show the average age of AK Party applicants is 46. According to education profiles, 51 percent of the applicants are university graduates, 22 percent of them have master's degrees or higher and 5 percent are only primary school graduates. As for professions, lawyers have the highest representation at 15 percent followed by engineers at 14 percent.
