CHP's Tekin recedes following claims made on Gülenist daily

Turkey's main opposition, the Republican People's Party (CHP) Secretary General Gürsel Tekin has claimed that Turkey will intervene in Syria within two days, during an interview published by the Gülen Movement-affiliated Taraf newspaper on Thursday. As the CHP is known for its closeness with the Gülen Movement, it has been harshly criticized by its deputies such as the İzmir Deputy Birgül Ayman due to accusations of the party forming an alliance with the movement during the March 30 local elections. In regards to Tekin's alleged claims included in the Gülenist daily, Prime Ministry sources speaking to Daily Sabah have said that "the government will not reply to Tekin's claims, as they are deceitful."

During Tekin's interview, he has said his sources reportedly stated that prior to the upcoming June 7 general elections in Turkey, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) will intervene in Syria in an effort to postpone the elections as a result of the party's alleged decline in votes. In the meantime, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız has urged Tekin to review his sources. "Tekin must declare his sources, as I advise him to review his sources as the claims are fabricated," Yıldız said on Thursday. While the government has dismissed such claims, Tekin has taken a step back regarding his claims by stating that "all possibilities are being discussed as the elections are approaching."Continuing his statements to media members on Thursday, he added, "The recent developments in the Middle Eastern region trigger discussions on all sorts of possibilities. I have not heard anything regarding the issue [referring to the claims] from Ahmet Davutoğlu or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs." Tekin has underlined that he has only voiced claims, but he is unsure of their accuracy.
