Deputy PM: ‘Parallel structure’ works to create negative opinion of Turkey

Deputy Prime Minister Babacan said that the news and comments on Turkey in the international press have been negative since the Gezi Park protests in June 2013. Responding to a question on the campaigns claiming Turkey became an unrecognizable country, Babacan said that the ones who follow Turkey in certain international press outlets cannot hear any positive developments about the country.Babacan said it started with the Gezi Park protests and was exacerbated with the Dec. 17 and Dec. 25 operations, adding that the Gülen Movement's "parallel structure" tries hard to create a negative opinion of Turkey. According to Babacan, the members of this structure meet with members from the international press and parliamentarians individually to this end. He said that it is quite different than the reality of Turkey and added that those who individually visit Turkey have a positive opinion about the country while those who hear about it from the media are motivated by one-sided views. He finished by saying that Turkey has gone through a very hard time over the past two years.
