President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan tweeted for the very first time Monday on the occasion of World Anti-Smoking Day.
"Remove bad habits, especially cigarettes, from our lives for healthy generations and our country's future," Erdoğan wrote.
The president also called on people to be courageous against smoking and to overcome the bad habit. "Today is February 9 World Anti-Smoking Day. Have a determined will against this poison and do not turn yourself into cigarettes" Erdoğan tweeted.
The account '@RT_Erdogan' has been active since August 2009 with 3,362 tweets and 5.71 million followers. However, Presidency's Corporate Communications Chairman Mücahit Küçükyılmaz said that the President marks his own tweets with 'RTE', standing for the initials of his own name.
Küçükyılmaz said that the account has been taken over from Erdoğan's followers and will be used by Erdoğan himself and his team from now on.
Erdoğan had previously criticized Twitter due to its alleged role in facilitating the spread of the Gezi Park protests and false corruption allegations. Turkish media outlets have commented that the President has made "peace" with Twitter through his first tweet.
