Gülenist suspect flees day before Dec 14 operation

Gülen Movement-affiliated journalist Nuh Gönültaş, who was on the list of suspects who had a detention warrant issued for them as part of an investigation launched by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office, reportedly fled abroad a day before the December 14 operation was conducted. Twenty-seven people, including police officers and media staff with alleged links to the Gülen Movement, were detained in operations carried out by the Public Prosecutor of Istanbul on Sunday. According to the prosecutor's statements, the operations were carried out to investigate the involvement in establishing an armed terrorist organization and fabrication of crimes under the scope of a terrorist organization.Gönültaş also had a detention warrant issued against him, however the police could not find him at his house where they went to detain him. It was later revealed that he had traveled abroad before the operation took place. He is believed to have found out about the operation beforehand from the FuatAvni Twitter account, which is presumed to have ties to the Gülen Movement, which released the date of the operation and a list of possible suspects. The basis for his detention was allegedly his support for a plot set by members of the Gülen Movement against a group sharing similar Islamic principles in an attempt to cripple the activities of the movement's rival. The Gülenists, who are already notorious for carrying out operations against targets they consider a threat to their entity by allegedly infiltrating key government bodies such as the judiciary and police, targeted a group in 2010 which Fethullah Gülen, the leader of the movement, allegedly named "Tahşiye." The group is a branch of the Nur Movement based on the principles of the prominent Islamic scholar Said Nursi, as is the Gülen movement. Seeing the group's opposition as an obstacle to being able to carry out their activities freely, Members of the Gülen Movement allegedly used their power in the police and judiciary and conducted an operation against the group to eliminate its rival. The alleged media extension of the plot led to some journalists being detained. Gönültaş was one of the media members who wrote about the Tahşiye group supporting the existence of a plot against the Gülen Movement. A daily close to the movement published an article in April, 2009 with the title: "Tahşiye has been decoded, we have to find a new name." Gönültaş, in his article, blatantly targeted the group and labelled its so-called members as terrorists. This article made him a suspect in the investigation into Gülenists' offense of 'fabricating crimes'.Gönültaş allegedly contributed to the black propaganda which the Gülenists conducted against the group with his further writings.
