Political iceberg of Brexit has ultimately drowned the titanic of United Kingdom (UK) into the heart of democratic ocean. A few months ago a movie "London Has Fallen (2016)" was released. It seems democratic comedy drama of Brexit materialized the title of this movie actually and London is going to fall if not fallen yet. It was not just a movie; it was a prophecy.
In this article, I am going to introduce a brand new scholarship or theory in the context of expected Brexit event in UK. This theory is based on five assumptions:i) Democracy has seeds of its own destruction;ii) the people who live by the democracy, they will die by the democracy as well;iii) misguided general will is not good for a nation, politics and democracy;iv) extreme democratic maturity sometimes lead nation towards stupidity; andv) dictatorship is the ultimate resort of highly democratic people.
I will use Brexit poll results as an evidence to prove my thesis in this writing. Brexit event is yet to be executed and UK is still member of EU. All the Brexit related debate in coming paragraphs is based on some apprehensions about exit of UK from EU.
People of UK validated again that their millenium annorum democratic conventions are the most ideal and developed in the world. On the stage of democracy, the comedy drama of Brexit poll was played well on 23rd June, 2016 in UK. 51.9% British people voted to leave European Union (EU) and 48.1% voted in favour of status quo. General will of Britains rocked on the roads of London, Edinburgh and Belfast. English political leadership was shocked and the grace of centuries old Palace of Westminster was fractured on the results of Brexit poll. British Prime Minister David Cameron announced his resignation on 24th June, 2016 following Britain's vote to leave the EU. Brexit poll results declared Cameron as a historic disastrous failure in the British democratic history.
It is expected that UK will leave EU most probably because Queen has no moral justification to stay in EU anymore after Brexit poll. British people created and executed this democratic drama which is nothing but an ultimate disaster and British Parliament even failed to handle the issue. The event of Brexit poll can be compared with the movie "Bean: the ultimate disaster" (1997) and it looks Rowan Atkinson wrote the script of this democratic comedy play of Brexit.
UK exit from EU has political, economic, global and regional implications and fallouts.
1) Political:
Firstly, UK is no more united after Brexit polls and cracks are visible into the royal empire of UK. Brexit poll results reveal that most people of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar want to remain in EU and so Brexit can trigger sentiments of separation or independence in these three constituent parts of the UK. May be rule of queen will be limited to England and Wales within one decade. Following map shows how UK has been bifurcated into two poles after Brexit. UK is an empire where democratic traditions were introduced and flourished. So this doctrine of general will can probably direct Scotland, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar towards independence and autonomy struggle and movement. Following map shows in the nutshell how UK was divided on the basis of general will by Brexit.
Secondly, political leadership, Parliament and two party system in UK was exposed as a failure and dysfunctional and it looks there was no any political leadership existing in UK when the lethal recipe of Brexit was being cooked a few months ago. Neither Queen nor Parliament did something to make their people understand the long term aftermaths of exit from EU.
2) Economic:
Major expected economic aftermaths of Brexit are:
i) London will be no longer be the financial and business hub of Europe;ii) The market value of the pound is expected to decrease in international markets against the dollar and the euro will outclass pound sooniii) Financial crisis;iv) Economic recession;v) Existing and working trade agreements with companies from EU member states will be disrupted;vi) Property values will decrease in the U.K.;vii) Economic and trade alienation; it will be difficult for the U.K. to make profits in international markets while living in isolation;viii) Big European economies like France and Germany will swallow the isolated U.K. economy;ix) Shifting of banking business and outflow of capital from the U.K. to other EU states;x) Consumer market will be affected in the U.K. due to people returning to the their native EU member states;xi) The U.K. will not be an ideal state in Europe for foreign investors.
3) Global:
Firstly, Britain was an imperial and colonial power in the past. After the era of colonialism and World War II, the U.K. emerged as an influential power. The United Nation was established in 1945 and, since then, the U.K. is among the five permanent members of the U.S. Security Council (UNSC). The Brexit might initiate a debate to strip the jewel of UNSC permanent membership from Britain. Also, if the Brexit is executed, then it may lead the U.K. to disintegrate or breakup. In that case, it could empower Germany to replace the U.K. on the UNSC.
Secondly, the U.K. has been a major European ally of the United States in 20th and 20st centuries. After 9/11, Britian joined the U.S. in the adventures in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya. In case of the Brexit being realized, the U.S. might be more interested in divorcing this old friend or marrying new one.
Thirdly, isolated and politically weak, the U.K. will loosen its grip and hold on the Middle East. In that case, it will be a good chance for Russia to replace British influence in Middle East.
Fourthly, the historic rivalry between the U.K. and Russia is just like the animosity between a bear and a dog. No doubt, Europe will get weaker id Britain leaves the EU and then Kremlin will be very happy and amused.
4) Regional:
Firstly, the triangle of the U.K., Germany and France is very important regionally in Europe. France and Britain are historical and traditional fighting camps. A Brexit will empower Germany and France in the EU and these two countries could alienate the U.K. in Europe. It is a big question how the U.K. alone will survive in Europe in 21st century alongside the EU? It is the era of globalization where regional alliances also play pivotal roles in one way or the other.
5) Socio-cultural:
Globalization is in full swing in the 21st century. The EU was established in 1993 and it created a lot of multi-culturalism and inter-faith harmony among member countries. Racial discrimination and geographical boundaries were erased. Citizens of an EU member country are free to go and work anywhere in other EU countries. So all these measures resulted in a lot of cultural diffusion in Europe. There is a probability that the people of an isolated Britain can again resort to racism, religious discrimination and extremist nationalist tendency.
Conclusion:The Brexit referendum was not a "felix culpa" for British history, it was a "somnum exterreri solebat." The political leadership and power structures in the U.K. failed and flopped terribly. The misguided general will of the British people and their leaders are leading the U.K. to political and economic catastrophe and point of no return. Here, my theory says that one, British democracy, the most well developed democracy of the world, emerged as a comedy after the Brexit vote; two, extreme democratic maturity has led Britons to the brink of destruction; three, the general will of the people in the U.K. shows that either Britain has gone mad or it again wants to be a world superpower; four, because democracy, the two-party system and philosophy of general will failed in the U.K. with the Brexit vote, so the Queen deserves the right to abolish parliament and revive the monarchy.
UK is still member of EU and Brexit is yet to be happened and now ball is in the court of Queen. Now Queen will have to decide with concilium. about throne or booty and office of Queen can save UK from ultima clade. Otherwise, royal empire of her ancestors will be hardly visible on google map within a decade.
