The 17th Ankara Jazz Festival kicks off today with a traditional opening performance by the "Eagles of Jazz," the Turkish Air Force's orchestra
ANKARA — Tonight'sopening ceremony will be a parade of stars accompanying the Eagles of Jazz on stage for the first time at the MEB Şura Hall - keeping the tradition alive. Eagles of Jazz will be joined by famous vocalist and trombonist Aydın Kahya; Jülide Özçelik, the jazz singer who charms audiences with her dazzling voice; Meltem Ege an award-winning jazz star who graduated from Berkley College of Music; Yıldız İbrahimova, the internationally acclaimed improvisation master and Zuhal Olcay, who is as good an actor as she is a jazz vocalist, among others. Ankara will host 25 concerts by acclaimed international and local jazz artists in various venues in the city.
The festival has selected "vocal" as its theme and will mostly present famous vocalists. Pink Martini, who visited Turkey many times and is well-known and loved in the country is among some of the international names. Talented Portuguese songwriters and jazz musicians Luisa Sobral and Raul Midon, as well as Aga Zaryan and a one-man-band discovered by Arif Mardin will also perform during the festival.
Many local and well-known bands to Ankara audiences, including "Dolce Vocal Jazz" and Şenay Lambaoğlu, will be performing as part of the festival. One of Turkey's most successful and popular jazz ensembles, "The Kerem Görsev Trio," who also performed at previous festivals, and Ayhan Sicimoğlu accompanied by the beloved Turkish jazz vocalist Elif Çağlar and new vocalist of the "Latin All Stars," Suami Ramirez, will perform together for the closing ceremony on June 15.
