Release of Khader Adnan welcomed as a victory by Palestinians
Khader Adnan is one of the most important figures in the Palestinian community and the leading Islamic organization "Palestinian Islamic Jihad." Adnan has become a symbol of the Palestinian struggle for statehood. The release of Adnan has been welcomed by Palestinians, especially in his village near the Jenin, on the northern West Bank. Palestinian residents celebrated the release with fireworks and anthems. Islamic Jihad has congratulated Adnan and mentioned it as "victory." He has previously been on a 66-day hunger strike in 2012 to protest his detention. Last July, Adnan was given six months of administrative detention, followed by extensions. Adnan has been accused of kidnapping and murdering three Israeli teens and was detained by Israeli officials a year ago. In addition, Israel has arrested hundreds of Palestinians in response to the killings.
On July 11, Israel released the Palestinian activist and senior member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad over the 56-day hunger strike in an Israeli jail. A spokeswoman for the Israeli prison authority confirmed the release without any details. Over the release, he welcomed the decision. "I see the happiness on the faces of Palestinians. I hope for the freedom of all prisoners." he said. Over the release, Adnan reacted against Israel. "The occupation force made a mistake in arresting me the first time and second time and all the previous arrests." he said. According to the Palestinian Prisoners Society, within the hunger strike period, Adnan rejected the medical tests and took vitamins. Also Israeli officials did not allow Adnan's family to visit him for "security reasons." Adnan ended his latest hunger strike on June 28 in an agreement with Israel and transferred to an Israeli hospital for medical tests. He denies the charges that were brought against him. He claims he had never been involved in violence. He was arrested by Israel on July 8, 2014 at the Israeli security checkpoint near the northern West Bank city of Jenin. Using the killing of the three Israeli teens as a pretext, Israel launched attacks on Gaza and carried out heavy air strikes for more than 50 days. During the attacks on Gaza in 2014, more than 2,200 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians, were killed and over 11,000 Palestinians were injured.
Recently, the International Committee of the Red Cross expressed it concerns that his life was at "immediate risk." According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, currently over 500 Palestinians are being held in administrative detention by Israelis. According to B'Tselem, as of the end of April, Israel held about 5,500 Palestinians, including 396 in administrative detention. The number of administrative detainees has risen to 473, B'Tselem said. Around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners went on hunger strike in 2012 to protest against the administrative detention policy.
According to the Ramallah-based Addameer Prisoner Support Network, 426 Palestinians are currently administrative detainees in Israeli jails. Over 6,500 Palestinians are currently in prisons, Palestinian officials said. The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) reported that 1,226 Palestinian's under the age of 15 were taken into custody by Israeli forces. According to the PLO, 200 of them are still in prison. The number of children arrested in Palestine has grown 87 percent compared with 2011, the PLO said. In 2012, Amnesty International issued a report detailing the human rights abuses associated with administrative detention, which, it said, Israel uses to "suppress the legitimate and peaceful activities in the occupied Palestinian Territories." Amnesty called for the "immediate and unconditional release" of prisoners held under this policy. Also Palestinian officials submitted a report last week to the International Criminal Court (ICC) that included the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
