The Palestinian Foreign Ministry and resistance faction Hamas condemned on Monday recent statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he suggested that the city of Jerusalem -in its entirety- was Israel's capital, saying the statements served to "undermine any chance for peace".Netanyahu's remarks represent "an official Israeli declaration of the 'Judaization' of the holy city [Jerusalem], the imposition of Israeli control over it, a daily threat to Palestinian existence in it, and a blatant falsification of the city's history," the ministry said in a statement."The Israeli prime minister's statements show contempt for international law, ignore the will of the international community, and all international legal statutes stipulating that East Jerusalem is part and parcel of Palestinian territories occupied since 1967," the ministry added.The ministry went on to say that Netanyahu's statements sought to appease Israel's extreme right-wing and its plans to destroy the two-state solution and undermine any prospect for peace.Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri, for his part, said that Netanyahu's remarks about "not dividing Jerusalem under his rule" constituted unequivocal proof of past peace negotiations that all ended in failure."All plans aimed at the Judaization of Jerusalem will fail to change its identity," Abu Zuhri said.In a speech on Sunday marking the 48th anniversary of what Israel calls the "unification" of Jerusalem, Netanyahu said the city's "division led to dishevelment. Its unification led to its growth. Jerusalem will not be a wounded city again. We will keep Jerusalem united under Israeli authority".He added: "This is our home, and we will remain here. At the same time, we will make sure that Jerusalem is an open city. Only under the governance of Israel has the right to worship for all religions been kept.
