Gaza death toll jumps to 1837


Two Palestinians were killed Monday morning in Israeli shelling of the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, bringing to 1837 the total number of Palestinians killed in the ongoing Israeli onslaught against the blockaded coastal enclave."The Israeli army targeted the eastern areas of Khan Younis this morning killing two people," Palestinian Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qodra told Anadolu Agency."This increases to 1837 the total number of Palestinians killed in the ongoing Israeli offensive," he said.The death toll includes at least 401 children, 238 women and 74 elders."As many as 9420 Palestinians have also been injured in Israeli attacks during the same period," al-Qodra said.Israel has been pounding the Gaza Strip-home to 1.8 million people-since July 7 with the stated aim of halting rocket fire.Gaza-based resistance factions, meanwhile, have continued to fire rockets at Israeli cities in response to the ongoing Israeli attacks, killing three civilians.At least 64 Israeli soldiers have also been killed in battles with Palestinian fighters inside the besieged Gaza Strip.The offensive-codenamed "Operation Protective Edge," is the self-proclaimed Jewish state's third major offensive against the densely-populated coastal enclave within the last six years.
