Late Spanish businessman’s fellow villagers inherit his $210M wealth

Eighty people from a small village up in the foothills of Spain's Cantabrian Mountains became millionaires as their fellow villager, owner of one of the world's largest brewing companies, did not forget them in his will.

Antonio Fernandez Rodriguez, founder of Grupo Modelo that incorporates famous beer brands of Corona, Modelo and Estrella, died at the age of 98 on Aug. 31.

Rodriguez identified 80 people from his native Cerezales del Condado village located in central Spain's Leon province to distribute his $210 million personal wealth to.

Each villager inherited some $2.6 million thanks to Rodriguez, who moved to Mexico in 1949 at the age of 32.

But that was not all Rodriguez had done for his native land. He also founded an NGO and a company in Leon for the integration of people with disabilities, and left some of his wealth to around 300 of its employees. A similar NGO was also founded by Rodriguez in the Mexican state of Puebla, where one of Grupo Modelo's breweries is located.

The company controls some 65 percent of Mexico's beer market, whereas Corona is among the most exported beers in the world.
