When thinking about Istanbul's never-ending busy public transportation system, ferryboats are presumably the most enjoyable way to travel from one side of the city to another. Starting today, these journeys will be more colorful as music groups or individual musicians will begin to perform for passengers every day.
Seeing musicians playing the guitar and singing is common on ferries, yet the new practice has given them more room as a special place will be allocated for their performances. There are 25 registered music groups, comprised of 63 musicians right now and they will make the ferry trip more entertaining at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Şehir Hatları [City Line] Ferry Services' six routes - "Beşiktaş to Kadıköy, "Karaköy to Kadıköy," "Eminönü to Kadıköy," "Üsküdar-Eminönü," "Haliç" and "the Princes' Islands."
Musicians will bring their instruments ranging from the cello to ney (reed flute) and guitar to the classical kemençe. Yakup Güler, the general manager of Şehir Hatları Ferry Services said that they received a large number of applications. "The musicians will represent Istanbul's diverse cultural scene. We also respect passengers who wish to have a more silent trip therefore the music hall is open to all passengers who want to enjoy music performance while traveling," he said.
Musicians will be given a schedule following the registration and they will perform in turns.
