Disabled people enjoy the sun at accessible beaches

A special beach has recently been opened in Muğla's Ula district for people with physical disabilities. Located in the district's Akkaya neighborhood, Akkaya Beach, which also has Blue Flag status, has been redesigned to meet the requirements of people with disabilities and their families. A special platform by which the disabled can access the sea, specially designed sunbeds and changing rooms are all available to visitors.

Hacı Koç, the president of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Health and Social Services Directorate, said that the accessible beach is just one of the projects that the municipality undertakes to support people with disabilities. "We are helping people with disabilities to enjoy the sun and sea like other local people. This project is an initiative to integrate them into social and sports life," he said, adding that they plan to open four more accessible beaches in Milas, Datça, Bodrum and Ula by the end of June.

Emine Çakıroğlu, the president of Muğla Association for People with Disabilities, expressed her satisfaction with the project. Stressing that the disabled suffer from difficulties while sunbathing or enjoying the sea, Çakıroğlu said: "They will feel themselves freer when they come here." At present, there are three other accessible beaches in Muğla, apart from the one in Akkaya.
