International survey reveals top destinations for expats

InterNations, a global expatriate social network, has released a report detailing the happiness levels and living situation of expatriates around the world.

The detailed graphic, with a list that ranks the best and worst spots among 64 destinations around the world, showed that Ecuador ranked first in terms of satisfaction as an expat destination, followed by Mexico, Malta, Singapore, Luxembourg and New Zealand, while Nigeria, Kuwait and Greece have seen the lowest rates.

While one of the top destination points of expats – the U.K. – ranked 31st, Turkey ranked 53rd. Other destinations such as Qatar, Russia, Brazil and Italy are among the low rated countries, while Costa Rica, Poland, Bahrain and the Philippines rank high on the list.

Following the success of the report's 2014 edition, the international organization surveyed 14,000 expats from 195 countries and overseas territories about their life abroad. The rankings also revealed where expats enjoy the best quality of living, which countries were ideal for raising children and where could expats make the most of their budget, as well as compares the most popular destinations for expat women versus expat men. Moreover, the survey asked why expats relocate, what their daily life is like and how satisfied they are.

An overview of the ranking, including topics ranging from "quality of life index" to "what expats struggle with," stress some key findings. For instance, Russians predominantly move abroad to pursue academic goals, while British expats often intend to leave their home country behind for good. According to the index, Australians and U.S. expats alike tend to predominantly consider the cost of living abroad above other metrics.
