Most of the young Greek women who go to the province of Edirne in east Thrace to buy wedding gowns go back to their country without buying anything due to financial impossibilities. The number of people visiting the city for wedding gowns has declined compared to the previous year. Although future Greek brides are still interested in wedding gowns and accessories manufactured in Edirne, the economic crisis prevents them from purchasing the dresses that they desire. As stores do not want to rent the gowns, the young women return to their country empty handed.Speaking to Anadolu Agency, wedding gown and trousseau storeowner Ahmet Moranlı said that the young women who come from Greece for wedding preparations still want to purchase Turkish-made wedding dresses; however, they can only window shop.Saying that they sold several wedding gowns to Greek brides a couple of years ago, Moranlı continued: "We heard that most people's businesses have gone bad due to the economic crisis in their country. Those that come here do not buy wedding dresses anymore. They only purchase cheap trousseaus and return to Greece."The storeowner said that Greek women mostly like wedding gowns decorated with sparkly stones and lace. Moranlı said that most of the Greek costumers leave their store empty handed, as they do not rent dresses as store policy.Nicola Tzorta, who came to Turkey to buy a wedding gown, said that Turkish-made dresses are the most beautiful. She said that she likes the gowns decorated with stones and said: "The economic crisis in Greece affected us. We cannot buy wedding gowns from Turkey anymore; we just look."She said that most of her friends that got married a few years ago wore Turkish-made gowns, adding that the crisis in her country will affect future Greek brides as well. Tzorta claimed that gowns in Turkey are of a higher quality compared to the ones in Greece. She said that she has to return to her country without having a gown, as the stores do not rent dresses, and that she will try to find a cheaper wedding gown for her wedding.
