A Canadian university, the University of British Columbia Okanagan, has reportedly decided to introduce a new sociology course with a theme focused around the cultural importance of the world famous football star Cristiano Ronaldo, and how he affects society.
The course will be taught by Associate Professor Luis Aguiar, who says that it will focus on Ronaldo's fame to shed light on sociological and cultural matters, not merely his biography and football skills.
Speaking to Oporto radio station in Portugal about the structure of the course, Aguiar said, "Ronaldo will be at the centre, and every discussion and class meeting will initially revolve around Ronaldo. And then we will explore, we will broaden out to larger themes."
Ronaldo, the 30-year-old football legend, currently plays for the Spanish football club Real Madrid. He recently won the best player of 2014 accolade at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai.
Other celebrities have previously been taught as course themes, which have explored how their lives have impacted the shaping of popular culture and affected the lives of those who follow them.
Celebrities who have been taught in different social science classes across various U.S. colleges and universities include Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and the pop legend Michael Jackson.
