Students in Yozgat Science High School have developed a project designed to prevent car thefts and unlicensed driving. After the brother of a student was hit by a car driven by an unlicensed driver, the student developed a system preventing the car from running without a driving license. Because of the work done by the students, the car will not run without the driving license being inserted.
Saying that the project aims to prevent car theft and loss of life and property due to unlicensed driving, Beyza Dişlitaş, a student and owner of the project said, "After my brother was hit by an unlicensed woman driving her father's car, this project, which we named 'Safe Car,' came to mind. After this incident, I was thinking about ways to prevent such problems, and I came up with this idea."
Dişlitaş said that there is software inside a card reader that is put into the device used in the project, adding, "There are identified cards in the reader that we developed in a way that they can be arranged compatibly with the new driving licenses. The device is put inside the car and unless a license, which is identified by the car, is inserted into the device, the car does not run. I believe this project will prevent unlicensed driving, car thefts and young drivers who take their father's car without permission. Our device rejects unidentified licenses so we aim to prevent them in this way. It took us eight months and it costs TL 250. Moreover, it is easy to implement the project. The only thing you need to do is to put the software box into the car in order for the device to identify the license."
Metin Ergin, a chemistry teacher and the project's advisor, also mentioned the purposes of the project, adding, "It is a cost-efficient project requiring TL 250 and it can be easily installed in cars. Besides, a car never runs unless there is an identified driving license. We are also considering presenting the project to the General Directorate of Security, in terms of the utility of the project in all cars in Turkey."
