New project to track quality of shores
The water quality of 1,112 beaches in Turkey will be scrutinized as part of a project run by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey and the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning (TÜBİTAK). The experts at the Environment and Cleaner Production Institute of the TUBITAK Marmara Research Center (MRC) have developed an application within the scope of the project, making it possible to get instant information about the location, features, length, social facilities and activities of beaches via turkiyeplajlari.cevre.gov.tr. As part of the project, swimming water profiles have been created using a program named the "Uncleanness Tracking Program." The cause of any pollution that might affect health negatively as well as any counter-measures necessary will be identified by the program. The ministry will apply criminal sanctions to those who continue to pollute the shores. The project also aims to determine and classify shore dynamics and water quality, in accordance with the European Union Water Quality Directive, and to determine the necessary measures to achieve good water quality.
