A clean page to begin a new academic year

After a three-month summer holiday, the 2014/15 school year will begin on Monday, Sept. 15. A total of 16.4 million students and 873,000 teachers will start school next week. Among them, there will be 1.65 million pre-school, 5.64 million primary school, 5.9 million high school and 4.6 million vocational school students. Reportedly, 1.29 million children will begin primary school for the first time. Turkey's Ministry of Education will implement a number of new regulations.Within the scope of this, the harmonization (orientation) week will include not only firstyear primary students, but also first-year students in secondary schools. It was further reported that many students ask their parents to do their homework, which is considered a detrimental practice. This is because in addition to homework, teachers will also evaluate students' participation performance in class.Teachers will ask students to complete different projects that intend to develop students' cognitive, psychomotor and emotional skills under the guidance of a school counselor.Furthermore, selective courses will be assessed on a grade-basis this year. The ministry aims to create a high-quality educational environment by evaluating selective courses in an objective way. New student clubs will be formed in different fields such as fine arts, foreign languages, sports, folk dances and science projects for pre-school and primary school students. The clubs will carry out various activities after school. The monthly cost of the clubs for two hours each day range between TL 43 and TL 86. The first semester will end on Jan. 23, 2015. The mid-term break will start on Jan. 26 and end on Feb. 6. The second semester will start on Feb. 9 and end on June 12.
