You may be surprised when your toddler starts to swear or utter obscene words. Here are the underlying reasons of their misbehaviors with some recommendations
It isvery common for children aged three or four to swear or use obscene words. Even if parents come up smiling, they fall into despair and seek solutions. However, it does not work to shout at or be cross with the child.
How do children learn and give up saying embarrassing words? Psychologist Aycan Bulut enlightened us on this issue. It is normal for children aged three and four to behave independent from their families and utter offending words. These behaviors are sometimes accompanied by egocentric and persistent actions. Children's speaking skills are developed at such a rapid rate around these ages. The frequency of speaking and the quality of language use bear significance. Attempting to establish a clear communication with family, toddlers are good at expressing their wishes and complaints. They mimic the attitudes of family members and are not aware of whether their words or behaviors are properly understood. Basically, they do not understand any etiquette at all. The only thing they want is to act like an adult. This is because these children may swear and misbehave toward adults and their peers without hesitance. It is therefore necessary to delve into the underlying reasons of their improper attitudes.
When children get angry, they can humiliate other people by referring to them with animal names or sexually explicit phrases. Indeed, these are only innocent words slipped out with an attempt to defend themselves or show off. You may hear a child saying "bad boy" or "donkey" to their friends. In later ages, they describe people with the names of sexual organs such as "boob."
On the other hand, the language use of family members has a crucial role on children's language development.
If family members speak using bad words, the child presumably comprehends such insulting words as appealing. Furthermore, if they attract the attention of the family by swearing then they will receive negative feedback. Toddlers may learn how to swear from their friends, television programs or schools. They mostly learn right or wrong attitudes by observing.
Parents, thus, have an important role in shaping the child's behaviors. If your child continuously swears or shouts at home, then you are strongly recommended to check your own attitude. You should pay attention to your speaking and not get angry with or laugh at them.
Your child may think, "They enjoy my speaking," or "They get angry with me." In short, you can trigger you child's bad behaviors since they do know what is good or bad. The most important thing for
them is to get attention.
To solve this problem, you can talk with your child and say they will break someone's heart if they continue to speak in this way.
You should explain the real meanings of obscene words and do not remain indifferent when they swear. If the child keeps asking questions, you should remain calm and be patient. Children in these ages learn how to act properly from their families. It is better to warn them and be an understanding parent.
You can suggest alternative ways to your child to express their excitement or anger.
Tip: Encourage them to speak in a pleasant way Parents are supposed to set a good example for their child. It is not recommended to push the limits of your child displaying misbehaviors or uttering obscene words.
You should find suitable activities where they will not learn to swear. Spending more time with the child enables you to create explicit communication with your child and
encourage them to avoid such words.
