President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli met yesterday, with the two leaders reportedly addressing the widely debated presidential system along with the establishment of new constitution. The two had decided to meet following a reception held at the Presidential Palace on the Turkish Republic's 93rd anniversary on Oct. 29.The critical meeting, which took nearly an hour, also reportedly addressed the introduction of the death penalty, for which MHP Chairman Bahçeli expressed support earlier this week during the party's weekly group meeting.Daily Sabah was informed by a high-level Justice and Development Party (AK Party) official last week that the ruling party will propose two different constitutional amendment packages to the MHP in the upcoming days. Both Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Bahçeli have already expressed support for a referendum on a constitutional change and shift to a presidential system. The AK Party will hold a referendum on the presidential system even if it receives more than 367 votes, which was strongly welcomed by the MHP.
