Cabinet to ensure appointment of administrators means better municipal service

The Cabinet convened on Monday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım at the Çankaya Palace in Ankara with an agenda regarding the appointment of state administrators to municipalities whose officials are charged with various crimes, including membership in a terrorist group, aiding and abetting a terrorist group and terror financing. Findings presented at the meeting revealed that locals welcome the replacements.

Under the government's new goal of increasing "satisfaction," the Cabinet on Monday agreed to fully restore the infrastructure of every street in the 28 municipalities while rehabilitating slums. According to sources close to the government, Yıldırım had ordered the ministers at the meeting to personally visit the region and directly speak to locals to determine the needs of the provinces. Furthermore, the Cabinet agreed to ease the border crossing for Turkey's Kurdish citizens to meet their families in Syria or Iraq in the upcoming period.

Concerning the appointing of administrators, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ previously said: "Turkey will fight terrorism with every tool at its service within the bounds of the rule of law. The aim of the decree is to prevent the use of municipal services in aiding and abetting terrorist groups." In addition to mayors accused of being linked to terrorism, Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli told the media following the Cabinet meeting that nearly 28,000 teachers have been expelled from the profession and 9,465 others have been suspended over alleged links to terrorism.

Of the 28 municipalities whose mayors were replaced due to various crimes, 24 are accused of links to the PKK and the remaining four are accused of links to the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ). Out of the 28 mayors, 12 are currently in jail pending trial on charges of terrorism. Two are the mayors of cities – Batman and Hakkari – 24 are mayors of municipalities and two are mayors of smaller boroughs. Investigations revealed that the resources of the entire municipalities, with the tacit support of municipal officials from the very top, was mobilized to help PKK members hiding in the mountains with regular deliveries of arms, ammunition, food, medical supplies and recruits using municipal vehicles. Some terrorists who visited the town had stayed in municipal housing and were even allowed to order takeaway food, with municipal vehicles delivering the orders. The findings provided to the Cabinet said locals welcome the administrators and that the administrators had ended the victimization of locals. Furthermore, the Cabinet also determined its next goal to further enhance locals' satisfaction following the appointment of administrators while allowing them to feel that the government solely focuses on improving their livelihood.
