An Istanbul court has sentenced Fatma Karataş to life a year after she was arrested for dumping her 40-day-old daughter into the sea.

Karataş was caught after eyewitnesses saw her hurling the baby into the sea near a port in the city's Eminönü district in February 2017. The body could not be located. She claimed that the baby's father Mustafa Teneke had forced her to "get rid of the child." Teneke was acquitted in yesterday's hearing due to lack of evidence.

The defendant told prosecutors that the father had told her to kill the baby after she asked for money to care for the infant.
